Schröder Company

As a global leader, we set new goals in injection and curing technology.

In 1966 Helmut Schröder became self-employed and offered machines from leading manufacturers in the domestic food industry for sale. The young company also provided these services and quickly gained a reputation as a flexible and reliable partner.

Sales and service were soon no longer enough for the founder. It took only ten years for his company to present the first of its own curing machines at the world’s leading trade fair IFFA.

In 1977 Schröder presented the first injector at the leading international trade fair for the meat industry “IFFA” in Frankfurt. With its help, a saline solution was introduced into the meat to accelerate the maturing process. On the basis of the first machine, Schröder developed its own product line, which was launched in 1998. This enabled Schröder Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG to position itself as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of equipment for the production of cooked ham. More than 60 percent of production moved abroad.

Once food has been produced, it must also be packaged. Since the foundation of his company, Helmut Schröder has therefore also been active as a trade and service partner for thermoforming packaging machines. The company has extensive expertise in all aspects of these machines, and for this reason its first own packaging machines went into production from 2010 onwards, which formed a second mainstay of the company until the division was sold.

At the end of 2018, the US JBT Corporation took over the injection and curing technology division, since then synergy effects have been achieved especially with JBT Tipper Tie from Glinde. TIPPER TIE is a leading system supplier of processing and clipping machines and also has many years of experience in the food processing industry. Resources are being pooled in both companies across locations and work on market-oriented solutions is being stepped up.

Stein

Stein

In the late 1940’s an innovative business entrepreneur by the name of Sam Stein had started a food processing business in Sandusky, Ohio called Grill Meats, Inc..  Sam started out in the food business as a coffee salesman calling on local restaurants.  He noticed that these operators were hand making hamburger patties from ground beef.  He saw this as an opportunity and started his business selling pre-portioned hamburgers to the restaurant trade.  His business grew and he continued to expand his product offerings.

In the early 1950’s Sam saw a need to automate the process of batter and breading products.  Since there were no machines available on the market, Sam started a search and found a graduate engineer named Richard Johnson at Syracuse University who had co-developed a conveyorized machine to batter and bread fish portions at a local eatery called Jean’s Beans in Syracuse.  Sam hired Richard to build and machine for Grill Meats, Inc.. If successful, Sam told Richard he would start a company building these machines for the food processing industry.  Dick was successful, and in 1953, Sam Stein Associates, Inc. was formed to make conveyorized batter and breading equipment for the food processing industry.

Since that time the Stein name has been synonymous with innovative, high quality food production equipment.  The list of innovative industry firsts is long and includes a wide variety of coating equipment, batter mixers, tempura applicators and mixers, conveyorized fryers, hot oil filters, impingement convection ovens, spiral convection ovens to name just a few.  Today, the Stein brand lives on as a key part of the JBT product offering.

TIPPER TIE History

History Banner

Maynard Tipper (second from left) receives an award of appreciation from his colleagues.

Early Advances with Maynard Tipper

TIPPER TIE was founded in 1952 on one man’s revolutionary idea: the invention of the first successful labor-saving clip and tying machine for casings. The company was named TIPPER TIE after one of the company’s co-founders, Maynard Tipper. Its first product was the Tipper Casing Tyer, based on Maynard’s design.

In 1958, the company had its second revolution – a “second-tie” machine that would replace the laborious task of hand tying filled casings on the stuffing table. The ability to clip and close both ends of a meat casing by machine took the market by storm.

Continuing its focus on clipping innovation, TIPPER TIE then developed the Tipper Clipper together with the industry’s first U-clip. The high strength U-Clip design ensures package integrity during the clipping process by performing the final gathering of the material. As an added quality measure, TIPPER TIE began manufacturing its own wire to exacting specifications unavailable from the wire industry. This tradition continues today.

In the mid-1970s, TIPPER TIE developed a fully automatic rotary packaging machine, upon which vacuum packed bags were positioned and clipped by a specialized Tipper Clipper. This direct connection between clipper and bagger was another innovation, effectively making the clipping process a part of the overall production line.

Strategic Acquisitions

In 1994, TIPPER TIE acquired Technopack, based in Glinde/Hamburg, Germany. Technopack had an equally impressive history in the packaging industry, having introduced the first clipping machines and clip seals to the German and European market in 1960. Complementary equipment and close cooperation between TIPPER TIE and Technopack naturally progressed into the two joining forces as one company.

The TIPPER TIE family grew once again in 2000, with the acquisition of Swiss-based Alpina. With this move, TIPPER TIE gained high-speed double clippers, an automated hanging line for sausage production, and a heat-seal clipping system.

The addition of Technopack and Alpina products further strengthened the TIPPER TIE portfolio with solutions that are highly regarded as leading technologies

In 1981, TIPPER TIE joined the Dover Corporation and became part of its Refrigeration and Food Equipment division in 2014.today.

In 2016, TIPPER TIE became part of the FoodTech segment of JBT Corporation.
