HPP can be tough on packaging. That’s the bad news. Extreme pressure takes its toll on any packaging material, no matter how resilient. But the good news is JBT-Avure has been helping producers perfect package design for HPP since we first created the first HPP machine more than 60 years ago. So while designing an HPP-worthy package may not be easy, we know what it takes to make sure your product can take the pressure.
And since your product and the packaging it’s in will be going into the HPP machine, here are a few pointers to make sure your packaging is HPP ready:
- Flexible packaging is a must. The package must be able to conform to the product under pressure without experiencing permanent distortion.
- Glass and metal are a no-no. Any material that could break or permanently bend under pressure is not a good HPP packaging material.
- Blow molded bottles with simple sidewall designs combines with rigid bottoms and top shoulders are an effective choice.
- Cylindrical or rounded corner sidewall cross sections are preferred. This provides large symmetrical areas to accommodate volume reduction.
- Minimize headspace. This helps reduce the potential for permanent deformation or failure.
- Wider is better. Wide seals help make the package stronger and ensure integrity.
- Lid films should be thick. Thick enough to withstand the tensile forces of HPP.
- Recycled and recyclable plastics may be used. This makes HPP an environmentally friendly choice, important if you’re promoting a sustainable, eco-conscious product.
